Talking Comedy with Ranique from Big Mouth Entertainment

  • 18 October 2017 | By Anje Rautenbach

Ranique Roberts, the founder and director of Big Mouth Entertainment, has worked with some of our country's most popular comedians and has played right hand to some of the best comedy shows, not only in the Bay, but also in South Africa. As a creative entrepreneur, wife and mother - who gets by with the help of coffee -  her hardworking spirit in the entertainment industry is known to many and she radiates a passion for comedy, laughter and Nelson Mandela Bay. Besides producing live comedy shows, she also wears a few other hats and often MC events, blog and do make-up from time to time for special occasions and photo shoots.

We sat down with Ranique from Big Mouth Entertainment and talked about comedy, her career and a few of her favourite spots in the Bay!

Your feet are firmly planted in the entertainment industry, but why did you choose comedy?

I didn’t choose Comedy, Comedy chose me. From being in the right place at the right time to being trusted by some of the biggest names in SA Comedy. 10 years ago Comedy touched my life and from this point on there is no turning back.

When you’re not working, where do you and what do you get to a good ol’ laugh?

Believe it or not, I am actually an extrovert who enjoys her quiet time. Feet up, a bubble bath and Nora Jones to set the tone. For a good LOL I hang around my family.

What are some of the biggest highlights in your career so far?

In 2011 Stuart Taylor asked me to go on tour with him; we hit 7 cities around SA and shot a doccie for DSTV  - Diary of A Touring Comic. It was loads of fun and Mzanzi really got to see how things run or shall I say rock & roll behind the scenes. We recently also hit our 10 year milestone, the love and well wishes from so many in the industry has been so inspiring, so this is a BIG deal for me.

You are also a blogger, what do you enjoy writing about?

Beauty, and events with the odd parenting post every now and then.I enjoy writing about events I attended, the food the people etc. I also enjoy the creating bits and bobs, the pictures and layout and getting up on a chair to take a picture of this or that! Yes I am extra so I totally go over the top! To visit her blog, click here.

During Tourism Month, Ranique said: "I think we need to do what we can to encourage the little ones to share stories about “our home, our Africa”. I would like you to take some time, make the time, to explore you city and it’s beauty." Click here to read the rest of the post.

As someone who is born and bred in the Bay and always rooting for the Bay, what makes you so proud of our city?

The People of the city. I am always proud to say I come from a “small city”, we are small but we’ve got big heart!
