It's H E R I T A G E   M O N T H!
Whether you are planning to braai and slaai or even to sleep in you might want to check out the exciting things happening around the Bay while you get ready to wave the flag during the month that encourages us to celebrate our culture and unique diversity. 

Nestled in the heart of Central, between streets renamed after the legendary artists and theatre makers, The PE Opera House celebrates 126 years this year. 
It truly is a remarkable work of art.

Built in 1892, a gem, a hidden treasure – the PE Opera House is the longest running theatre on the continent of Africa and one of the oldest running in the Southern Hemisphere. This special piece of World History is right here in Nelson Mandela Bay.

On offer later this month you can look forward the work of local creative experts as part of the Drama Seasons programme.

 

The Master Key was written by Monde Ngonyama and directed by XabisoZweni, with a heavy talented cast made up by  – Anele Penny, Nobesuthu Rayi, Olwethu Mdala and Xabiso Zweni.

Saint’s journey from Fort Hare University to residence at Kirkwood Police Station cells makes for a drastic change of fortunes. He won’t cry as life of just about everyone around him was as messed up stretched to different ends in varied ways, from love to infidelity, consciousness to treachery, heartlessness to compassion. Everyone needs a Master Key in this play.

The Master Key will run from 26 September – 29 September 2018 in the Barn Theatre at the PE Opera House, with tickets from R100 available at the Theatre.

Also on the theatre-scene this month, St George’s Preparatory School brings Stephen Sondheim’s and James Lapine’s cockeyed fairytale to life in this adaptation of their groundbreaking, Tony Award-winning musical - Into the Woods JUNIOR. The musical centres on a baker and his wife, who wish to have a child; Cinderella, who wishes to attend the King's festival; and Jack, who wishes his cow would give milk. When the baker and his wife learn that they cannot have a child because of a witch's curse, the two set off on a journey to break the curse and wind up changed forever.

Show will run daily at 11h30 and 18h00 with ticket only R50 per person.

If eat and drink is more your scene, then be sure to make your way to Hacklewood to celebrate HERITAGE DAY! All your South African favourites will be infused with Hacklewood flair to give you the ultimate Heritage Day High Tea | 24 Sept. Think Hertsoggies, Koeksisters, Samoosas, Chilli Bites, Milktart and even Vetkoek.

Later this month, The Alliance Française in, Richmond Hill will be screening Le Petit Nicolas. A French family comedy realised by Laurent Tirard in 2009, starring Kad Merad and Valérie Lemercier.

Le Petit Nicolas is based on the best-selling books chronicling the adventures of Nicolas, a mischievous French schoolboy.
The movie will be screened Thursday 27th September at 18:30 at Alliance Française - R30 gets you in.


Towards the end off the month, you can end off heritage month on a high note as the Springboks kick off at 17:05  at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Port Elizabeth on 29 September 2018. Our boys in green and gold take on Australia in the Rugby Championship - Tickets range from R125 - R850 and are available at the stadium or on Computicket.

Finally the next ART IN THE PARK at St George's Park, will be held on Sunday 30 September.

The Morris Minor Society will also be displaying their cars in the park to celebrate their 70th Birthday.
