What to do on 16 December (and before and after)
The festive season is in full swing, and even those who are still at the office have a public holiday lo look forward to. 16 December is known as the Day of Reconciliation on the South African calendar, and if you are in the Nelson Mandela Bay area you’ll certainly find something to do – close to or on the day.
For an afternoon of horseracing, head to Fairview Racecourse on Monday, 15 December 2014. Entrance is free, with a full bar, catering and betting facilities available.

If you find yourself at the Boardwalk in Summerstrand from 15 to 19 December, head along to the Wimpy forecourt at Sun Boardwalk where a 4m-long horn will be awaiting you to shout your African dream.
This fun experience, brought to you by Forever Friday and Algoa FM, could also win you some cash, so be sure not to miss out. You can go on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday from noon till 7pm, and Tuesday (public holiday) from 10am to 3pm.

For a fun family day on 16 December, take a ride with Model Train Rides from 10:13 am where you can hop on some steam and diesel trains, priced from R6 per ride.

The Christmas Market at Feathers House could be your one-stop shop for all your Christmas shopping. Entrance costs R10 and children under 12 go in for free.

If you’re looking for a party to go to, Pools and Beats is where you should be. Rap artist AKA and DJ Kent will be turning up the heat at Havana Blu, with additional performances by local artists.

The 16th marks Opening of the Season, an annual highlight of summer season activities at Hobie Beach. Get ready for festive fireworks and live music performances from local and national artists. Artists who have graced the stage in previous years include pop band Jamali and the Liquid Deep duo.

On 18 December 2014, the Phola Festival will be happening at Walmer High School. A crowd of 3 000 people is expected at this picnic style event, so make sure to bring your camping chairs.
For an adventure on the creepy side, haunted walks will be taking place on two evenings: 18 December and 22 December at The Club in Central. The tour is expected to last two hours and guests will find out all they want to know about the ghosts of Port Elizabeth. It costs R60 for adults and R40 for learners.
