The Nelson Mandela Bay Pass – your ticket to loads of fun

  • 18 December 2014

There are many ways to enjoy summer in Port Elizabeth. With its beautiful beaches and many activities taking place along the boardwalk, the city has a lot to offer. And if you buy the Nelson Mandela Bay Pass you will be able to enjoy many activities and enter several tourist attractions for free or at a discounted price.

The pass – a smart card – can be used for about 50 attractions and activities (and even to rent a car) in and around Port Elizabeth. There are a number of options available.

You could choose a five-in-one pass for R250 per child and R450 for an adult. This pass can be used for any five of the offers on any one day over a period of three months.

The unlimited itinerary passes are valid for one, two, three or seven days, depending on which one you choose. The seven-day pass costs R800 for an adult and R500 for a child, and you can cram in as many of the activities on offer over this period. Although these cards are also valid for three months, they have to be used on consecutive days.

Some of the exciting activities on offer include sandboarding, paintballing, a city or township tour, and dolphin and whale watching.

The pass could give you a three-hour sandboarding experience along the Sundays River with Sundays River Sandboarding (you have to be a minimum of four people). The offer includes a boat transfer to the dunes and back, sandboarding lessons and board hire.

If sandboarding is not for you, consider booking a free Sundays River ferry trip. The Sundays River borders the Addo Elephant National Park and there is plenty of birdlife to marvel at. The ferry only departs if there's a minimum of seven people on board.

You can also try your hand at a round of golf. Card holders get a free round as well as free equipment hire at the Walmer Park Golf Club

Adrenalin junkies can get their fix doing the Tsitsikamma Treetop Canopy Tour with Stormsriver Adventures based in the pretty Stormsriver village. Get your high by swinging through the tree tops from one platform to another. Card holders get a 20% discount when booking a tour.

If you are up for spotting bottlenose dolphines or whales, book your trip with Raggy Charters. They offer a 25% discount on a trip from Algoa Bay Yacht Club to Penguin Island.

Why not try a free game of paintball at Paintball Heaven? They have two paintball venues – one in Victoria Drive, Walmer, Port Elizabeth, and the second in Kruisrivier Road, Uitenhage. Booking is essential.

The Addo Elephant National Park gives pass holders free entry for a day. The park is one of the best places to see elephants and it is home to the Big Seven, which is the Big Five including great white sharks and southern right whales.
